In August of 2013, music publishing veteran, Pat Higdon re-launched his Patrick Joseph Music brand in the Nashville marketplace. The renewal of this successful publishing company marks a new partnership with New York and Los Angeles-based SONGS Music Publishing. Patrick Joseph Music will be dedicated to writer service, actively signing new writers as well as developing the reach for existing catalogs and songs.
Originally founded in 1989, the company began as a joint venture with Warner Chappell Music. Over the next several years, two subsequent ventures with Windswept Pacific Music served as a means to grow the company. The company was widely recognized as the premier independent publishing company of the decade. It served as a launching pad for many great writers including Matraca Berg, Tim Mensy, Gary Harrison, Brett James, Troy Verges and more. Over a 10 year period the company produced 31 ASCAP and BMI award winning songs including the 1995 CMA Song of the Year, “Strawberry Wine,” and the 1997 ASCAP Pop Song of the Year, “ I Can Love You Like That.” In 2000 Universal Music Publishing acquired a portion of the publisher’s rich song catalogue and also lured Higdon to run it’s Nashville office. He remained at UMPG for 12 years eventually rising to a position of President. He held this position until his departure in January of 2012.
About Pat Higdon
A Nashville native, PJM founder Pat Higdon broke into the music industry in the early 70’s as a recording engineer at one of Nashville's then prominent studios, Woodland Sound. While there he engineered recordings for many artists including Jimmy Buffet, Charlie Daniels, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Bobby Blue Bland, and Lefty Frizzell. During this period, Higdon developed associations with many songwriters and producers. These relationships were stepping-stones to a future career in publishing. After leaving Woodland he landed a position at Nashville’s Cedarwood Publishing company as both a demo engineer and song-plugger. He later served stints at MCA Music and Warner Chappell music before founding PJM. He is recognized as one of Nashville's most successful music publishers and is one of only a few Nashville publishing executives to achieve success in both the “corporate” publishing world and the “independent” publishing world. His skills not only include business acumen and entrepreneurial prowess, but he is also a respected "song plugger," with over one hundred and fifty top-ten chart recordings to his credit spanning the “country” and “pop” fields.
“After leaving UMPG I wanted to get back to the business of developing and nurturing writer and writer/artist careers. I was looking for a partner that shared the same vision for signing and developing songwriters and artists—the vision of a long term, creative focus and a marriage of old school and new era publishing approach. With SONGS, I know I’ve found just the right partner,” Pat Higdon comments.
